When we bit into the dumplings, we expected broth. Therefore, when the soup dumplings are steamed, the inside of the dumpling swells with the soup while adding flavor to the pork. Usually, the soup dumpling filling is a mix of pork, garnish and congealed soup base. The dumpling skin was fairly rough and was definitely thicker than any of the other variations we ate that day. The presentation of the dumplings was adequate. A “ cash only” sign (printed on computer paper no less), mandarin speaking chefs and grimy stools only added to the authenticity of this place. The restaurant definitely has a hole in the wall feel and seating is rather limited with about 40 available seats. The line moved rather quickly and within 30 minutes, we were seated. Even though it was a rainy and gloomy day, there was a long line to get a taste of their signature soup dumplings. Situated on Balboa Street, slightly north of Golden Gate Park in the Outer Richmond district, the restaurant possesses the highest Yelp review score of all the restaurants we visited. Shanghai Dumpling King is a classic San Francisco institution. Eat place will be graded by the quality of the dumpling skin, how savory the pork filling is and whether there is enough broth inside of the dumpling to end the drought in Northern California. At each location, we will only order the classic Shanghai steamed dumplings (上海小籠包) filled with pork. We put aside an entire Saturday afternoon(11 hours worth) a pair of baggy sweatpants and our good judgement, just so we can find and crown the best soup dumpling restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area. Even though the San Francisco Bay Area(our hometown) has one of the largest concentration of authentic Chinese restaurants, finding a soup dumpling place that even remotely resembles Din Tai Fung has been futile. In fact, we can’t stop thinking about those savory, juicy morsels of soup and pork perfection. Overall, would definitely recommend should you be near Chinatown.The TripQue team visited the original Din Tai Fung in Taipei last year and since then, we keep dreaming of those delicious little soup dumplings (小籠包), also known as Shanghai steamed dumplings. A generous portion, and he wasn't able to finish it. Hubby ordered the house special chow mein and the flavour was delicious. The peel was perfectly thin, and the vinegar dip complemented the bao just right. The soup was tasty, and the consistency of the meat was well-done. The little baos rounded out the meal nicely. A delicious spicy broth and the noodles were delicious and just the right chewiness. I had to try the hand-pulled noodle, and went with the flat hand-pulled braised beef noodle soup. I only note this because they don't have A/C or a fan but they don't really need to normally. While we hear SF is normally quite temperate, this day was especially warm (95F/31C). We were on our way to a different restaurant as recommended in Yelp, but this one caught my eye because I saw that they had hand-pulled noodles and xiaolongbao! Sold! We came during a weekday around 11:45. Such a yummy little restaurant we happened upon.
